Here's their next move: The Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, or CISPA, would obliterate any semblance of online privacy in the United States.

And CISPA would provide a victory for content owners who were shell-shocked by the unprecedented outpouring of activism in opposition to SOPA and Internet censorship.

The House of Representatives is planning to take up CISPA later this month. Click here to ask your lawmakers to oppose it.

SOPA was pushed as a remedy to the supposed economic threat of online piracy -- but economic fear-mongering didn't quite do the trick.

So those concerned about copyright are engaging in sleight of hand, appending their legislation to a bill that most Americans will assume is about keeping them safe from bad guys.

This so-called cyber security bill aims to prevent theft of "government information" and "intellectual property" and could let ISPs block your access to websites -- or the whole Internet.

Don't let them push this back-door SOPA. Click here to demand that your lawmakers oppose CISPA.

CISPA also encourages companies to share information about you with the government and other corporations.

That data could then be used for just about anything -- from prosecuting crimes to ad placements.

And perhaps worst of all, CISPA supercedes all other online privacy protections.

Please click here to urge your lawmakers to oppose CISPA when it comes up for a vote this month.

Thanks for fighting for the Internet.

Black March - Thursday March 1st 2012 to Saturday March 31st 2012 With the continuing campaigns for internet-censoring litigation such as SOPA and PIPA, and the closure of sites like Megaupload under allegations of 'piracy' and 'conspiracy' the time has come to take a stand against music, film, and media companies' lobbyists. The only way is to hit them where it hurts. Their profit margins. March 2012 is the end of the First Quarter in economic reports world wide. Do not buy a single record. Do not download a single song, legally or illegally. Do not go to see a single film in cinemas, or download a copy. Do not buy a DVD in the stores. Do not buy a videogame. Do not buy a single book or magazine. Wait the four weeks to buy them in April: see a film later, etc... Holding out for just four weeks, maximum, will leave a gaping hole in media companies profits for the first quarter, an economic hit which will in turn be observed by governments world wide as stocks and shares will blip from a large enough loss of incomes. This action will give a statement of intent: "We will not tolerate the Media Industries' lobbying for legislation that will censor the internet."
Original image and campaign source: reddit.

Edited to add my own thoughts (not part of the original reddit call for action) And if you do not feel like taking a total break and perhaps want just a trial separation or couple's counseling, then perhaps consider Black March Lite 2.0 = spend, but spend money on those content creators and independent retailers who came out against SOPA/PIPA.  And tell them why you're buying their products in March.  There are many of them.

And for those who favor the more targeted boycott, you can find info  here.  But no matter which,  you can participate and you can tailor your level of participation.  We have the tools, the will and the strength to take a stand.

SOPA Boycott

Originally posted by [livejournal.com profile] morgandawn at SOPA Boycott
For those of you wanting to participate in the upcoming Black March protest against Internet censoring legislation, but favor a more targeted approach: The SOPA Boycott:  Boycotting those companies that sponsored or supported SOPA and PIPA.  This allows participants to focus their efforts on larger companies and avoid harming indie artists and small businesses.

There are lists being pulled together to help focus the boycott efforts.  One is here on Google Docs (but is lagging behind on being updated. The last official list of SOPA supporters was posted in December 2011 and can be found here).* Near the top of the Google Doc list is a link to a  boilerplate script  you can use to contact the individual companies you will be boycotting, to let them know your opinion and that you will not support their company unless they rethink their position. And there even is an app to help you identify the companies and their products.

So whether you favor a total boycott or a targeted boycott, you can participate and you can tailor your level of participation.  We have the tools, the will and the strength to take a stand.

*Note: As an example of the challenges of coming up with a final and accurate list of supporters, note that the Business Software Alliance that represents a  large number of  software and hardware companies (Dell, Apple, Intuit, Adobe) withdrew its support in November 2011 but still is listed on the Google Doc list. So when in doubt, you can always check with the company in question to determine their latest stance on SOPA if you do decide to pursue a targeted SOPA boycott.

edited to add: name of the targeted campaign, along with a link to the Android app.
edited to highlight text in the original post that pointed out that the lists of SOPA supporters  are in flux and not up to date. Once the SOPA and PIPA bills were withdrawn on Friday January 20, 2012 the House Judiciary Committee removed the lists of supporters.

BAD Internet Laws Heading Your Way

Originally posted by [livejournal.com profile] write_light at BAD Internet Laws Heading Your Way

From the flist:

Spread the word, even you're not a US citizen, it is important for everyone!! It easy to do and it can change everything. More info by clicking on the banner.

Website Blocking

The government can order service providers to block websites for infringing links posted by any users.

Risk of Jail for Ordinary Users

It becomes a felony with a potential 5 year sentence to stream a copyrighted work that would cost more than $2,500 to license, even if you are a totally noncommercial user, e.g. singing a pop song on Facebook.

Chaos for the Internet

Thousands of sites that are legal under the DMCA would face new legal threats. People trying to keep the internet more secure wouldn't be able to rely on the integrity of the DNS system.

Read this analysis from boing-boing.net

Get on the phone and call your representative. Express your disapproval. Tell him or her exactly how you feel, and that you don't support this. Tell your friends to call their representatives, their Congressperson, and complain. Mention that you are a registered voter that takes your civic responsibility seriously and that you will use that vote to express your feelings about this.

“We support the bill’s stated goals — providing additional enforcement tools to combat foreign ‘rogue’ websites that are dedicated to copyright infringement or counterfeiting,” the Internet companies wrote in Tuesday’s letter. “Unfortunately, the bills as drafted would expose law-abiding U.S. Internet and technology companies to new uncertain liabilities, private rights of action and technology mandates that would require monitoring of websites.”  The chamber-led coalition in support of the bill includes Walmart, Eli Lilly & Co. and Netflix.

Google and other opponents of the legislation argue that restricting the Internet in the U.S. sets a bad international precedent and that the language defines infringing too broadly.

Anyone who lives in Iowa needs to send our governor a message that tells him what we think about the bill; where businesses could refuse service to gay/lesbian couples because of their sexual orientation.  I did, because I hate what this bill stands for, and says about our state.  We do not believe in this sort of discrimination and it sickens me to think that this bill could pass.  https://governor.iowa.gov/contact/

Help find a cure for crohn's! :D

Hey everyone, my mom is walking for a cure to Crohn's and needs some donations to help out. If any of you guys could even spare a dollar towards this cause that would be awesome. http://online.ccfa.org/site/TR/Walk/Chapter-Iowa?px=2105335&pg=personal&fr_id=1763 Thank you guys!! ♥

Walk for the Cure
Help me reach my goal

This summer, I will be walking in the Take Steps for Crohn?s & Colitis Walk. Take Steps is CCFA?s national evening walk and celebration and the nation?s largest event dedicated to finding cures for digestive diseases. It is a casual 2-3 mile stroll to raise money for crucial research, bringing us closer to a future free from Crohn?s disease and ulcerative colitis. Over 1.4 million American adults and children are affected by these digestive diseases. While many suffer in silence, Take Steps brings together this community in a fun and energetic atmosphere, encouraging them to make noise and be heard.

Your donation will help support local patient programs, as well as important research projects. This cause is very important to me and I appreciate your help as we fight for a cure! In addition to donating, you can join me at the event. There will be food, music and kid?s activities. The more money we raise, the closer we will be to making life more manageable for patients who live with these diseases every day.

Please join me or donate to my efforts to support CCFA in finding a cure!

It's pretty obvious that you don't make basic grammatical errors.
If anything, you're annoyed when people make simple mistakes on their blogs.
As far as people with bad grammar go, you know they're only human.
And it's humanity and its current condition that truly disturb you sometimes.
